The Plight of Waste Pickers: A review
Waste disposal is a major global challenge of the 21st
century. Recycling waste improves environmental sustainability by reducing emissions
of greenhouse gases and strenghtens the economy by supplying packaging
materials and raw materials.Waste pickers are the major
players in collecting waste to the recycling industry. Large number of people
from low-income communities make a living by collecting, sorting, and then
selling reclaimed waste through middle-men to the recycling industry. Where
others see trash or garbage, the waste pickers see resources. They are very
good at sorting different types of waste by colour, weight, and end use for
selling to the recycling industry. Yet they are hardly recognized for the important role they are playing in creating value from the waste
generated by others and for their
contribution in reducing carbon emissions.
Luckily, civic bodies all
over the world have begun to promote the virtuous circle that comes with
integrating waste pickers, the world’s recyclers, into solid waste management.Brazil was the first country which integrated waste pickers,
into municipal solid waste management systems and also the first to adopt a
National Waste Policy, recognizing the contributions made by the waste pickers. The future of millions of
waste pickers around the world would largely depend on the policies and
practices of municipal governments. Programs are being developed and policies
are being promoted that recognize and
support waste pickers as a prominent part of the solid waste sector, who make
valuable contributions to cities, the environment, and their communities and
providing them with space and equipment to facilitate their important work.
What the waste pickers deserve is recognition for the services they provide; access to waste; the right to bid for solid waste management contracts; trucks for collecting and transporting waste; a safe space and equipment for storing, compacting, bundling, and processing waste; and fair prices for the waste they collect and the recycled materials that they reclaim, process, and sell. Integrating waste pickers into solid waste management is the win-win situation.
The review suggests that waste management is a necessary activity when it comes to preserving our environment. All the people playing a role in it shall deserve prestige and a better standard of living.
We at Pyrocrat Systems LLP, under the guidance of Mr. Suhas Dixit, provide efficient waste management solutions to recycle plastic and tire waste into pyrolysis oil and carbon black using a patented technology.
